6th Human Rights Discussion Series - Malaysian Academic Movement (MOVE)

The Human Rights Research Group (HRRG) at the Faculty of Law, University of Malaya is pleased to announce the sixth discussion in The Human Rights Discussion Series 2016.

These series bring together people who work on various human rights related issues and academics. In so doing, we hope to not only create a greater awareness of human rights issues in the country but more importantly, to identify areas where some of the needs of people working on the ground might be met by work done by the academic community. For instance, advocacy and policy arguments might be strengthened by the gathering of empirical evidence. The discussions series is meant to act as a catalyst for inter disciplinary academic research that will be of direct benefit to the community.

On 29 April 2016, the Secretary General of Malaysian Academic Movement (MOVE) will join us to discuss some very topical issues as follows :

"Current Issues in Academic Rights"

- The presentation will highlight some troubling issues in the universities that are affecting the rights of the academics and the universities : free space vs safe space, liberal education vs skill education, neoliberal administration, shift away from 'ivory tower' university model. Discussion will also be on how these issues are affecting the local universities, Some breaches of academic rights in Malaysia, especially academic freedom and university autonomy, will also be presented.

We would like to extend an open invitation to all academics and students to come and join in this discussion.
